Verbier: It's French, it's Fun, it's Freezing!

When we first arrived in Switzerland, it was right before the Easter holidays last year. I had no idea most people take the whole week off (because we already get 3 days anyway). This year, we were prepared! It was earlier this year and so we figured it would still be good for ski season. Our neighbor upstairs is Canadian and recommended Verbier. I figured Canadians know their snow - so we booked it! Verbier is in southern Switzerland - the French part. We left in the evening so we had to endure the switchbacks up the mountain - in fog - late at night. I can see how that drive in snow would take some white knuckles. But we made it! We checked into our place and got the kids into bed to rest up for a big day in the snow. First things first in the morning - feed the kids! We had a great location right next to the Medran lift and there's a great little cafe called OffShore that serves yummy large breakfast (pancakes! huevos rancheros!) Right on We had decided Day 1 wasn...

Back Back to Cali Cali

We returned to California for our Xmas break this year. It was a short one week but we packed a lot into that timeframe. And why not consider San Diego an exotic desintation worthy of reporting on? It's not actually our home (well, ok, technically for David it is since he was born at Camp Pendelton, which is located there, but neither of us grew up there) and it is a beautiful destination that attracts people from around the world. Flying into San Diego from Switzerland typically requires a layover somewhere (although now there are direct flights that operate during certain times of year on Edelweiss, a Swiss carrier). We chose to do the 12 hour flight to LA Airport (LAX) from Zurich (ZRH). Made it to LAX! With sass intact! This seemed like a good idea at the time but then I realized when preparing for the trip about a week beforehand that we would be landing in LA and driving to SD in the middle of rush hour. If you know anything about LA traffic, you know this is THE WOR...

I'm Just Wengen It

So we have found "our" place in Switzerland - Wengen. I decided we needed a trip to the Alps to celebrate David's bday. How had we lived in Switzerland for half a year and not been there yet, right? So we did a frantic search and found a place for September in Wengen. Wengen is a car-free village in the Alps, only accessible by train from Lauterbrunnen (only a mere 15 minute train ride so quite easy). It is part of the Jungfrau Region. Some mountains you may see here are Jungfrau, Eiger, and Mönch. It's a great hiking and skiing area. Just doing some Fall hiking There's a playground on top of the mountain Mooooooo Anyway, we went twice. Once in September and then again in early December, and both times were amazing for different reasons. In September, we were able to really take in the views and the waterfalls. We arrived late-ish on Friday after work (only 2 hour drive from Basel) to Lauterbrunnen and parked our call at the Bahnhof (rail station)....
