Chillon in Montreux with Grandma

Adventures never stop for the Salimarkles. Grandma made her first ever visit to Europe last weekend to see both of her grandkids in Switzerland. We sent her back to California with a lot of great memories. The Saturday before she left we went to Montreux to visit the Chillon Castle. Although our littles weren't very interested in the Castle they had a great time going to the beach. After eating some lunch by the shore, we went into town and let the adults have a meal followed by ice cream! On the car ride back Zavi decided to get very upset and threw up all over him. We had to pull over at a gas station to clean everything up. I'll be very happy when car rides are less eventful. :)

On Sunday, we finally lassoed Amaya's unicorn. After 4.5 months, we finally caught the purple train/tram! I took Daji out for his morning walk and saw the purple train passing our local tram stop. After some quick calculations we estimated when it would pass us again and decided to take a chance at getting lucky. And we were successful! Amaya you were so happy and we were so happy for you!!!

On Monday, Grandma had to go home. Not wanting our long weekend to come to a restful stop we made a decision on the way home to go to Europa Park. We came home from taking Grandma to SBB and said let's hop in the car and have some fun!

Two princesses arrived as we were leaving the park. Amaya your face is priceless. :)

After Europa Park there were fireworks for Swiss National Day! They didn't start until 11pm. Amaya you stayed up!!! After 3 minutes of fireworks you said you were tired and wanted to go home. Hopefully next year we'll be able to watch a little more of the action. Zavi you did well. We woke you up from sleeping and you didn't fuss too much. The fireworks were definitely interesting to you.

Zürich

We took the 1 hour train from Basel SBB to Zurich HB last weekend to meet up with a friend of David's. She is also here on assignment with her husband and family of 3 boys (God bless her - I already thought moving 2 was the limit but she managed it with 3 little ones and at around the same age we did with ours). Kids on a train! So we met up at Zurich HB, which is the main train station since they live a few train stops away. We stopped in the MigroLino to get some snacks on our way. Migros is one of the main shopping stores in Switzerland (along with Coop) and you know how big it is by how many "M"s are shown outside. MMM is the biggest, MM less so, and so forth and so on. This is the smallest but totally great for snacks - we got some sandwiches, chips, and sodas. Admittedly a pic from a different day/park but they have these swings at all the parks here and the kids love them. We then walked down the central street where the river/canal is (BahnhofQuai). Zugs and trains

The first of many trips to Colmar, we took the train (only 45 minutes!) to Colmar, France. Colmar is a quaint little French town with small little canals nicknamed "Little Venice." This place is basically the model for Beauty and the Beast. Little Town, it's Quiet Village... When you arrive by train, there's a short walk to the main part of the town. You can get some lovely food there - there are some traditional Alsatian dishes and, of course, try the Alsatian wine - and walk by the canals. Canals of "Little Venice" in Colmar Le coq! Didn't get a shot of the macaroons but I'm pretty sure the yumminess was why they decided to be nice to each other. :) There is a nice little park with a playground for the littles and an old-time carousel on the way (but we usually reserve this as a treat on the way back to the train). Fun fountains! Carousel - runs for a good 2+minutes! Anyway, that's a wrap. It's super e...

Croatian Me Crazy

Sladoled! Like Venice, we had heard that Dubrovnik is not exactly toddler friendly (note that this is different than kid friendly! There are a lot of things a 7 year old will enjoy that just don't work for a 1 and 3 year old but somehow everyone lumps kids together into one big bucket...). But we were pleasantly surprised by Venice, so we figured maybe Dubrovnik will be the same! Beautiful water! So clear, so blue! (so cold) We arrived at our hotel, Hotel Mlini, early in the morning (having taken a 4:45AM boat transfer back to Venice airport for a 6:00AM flight). We used Sun Transfers van with 2 car seats to get form the airport to the hotel, and that worked nicely. Even though check-in wasn't until late afternoon, Hotel Mlini checked us right in and fed us breakfast, which was very nice! The staff there were great - super nice to the kids. Unfortunately, they were experiencing cooler-than-average weather for August with some strong trade winds. The net-net was that t...
